Keller, Polk, Vandersloot win Seattle Sports Star of Year awards
Sounders FC goalie Kasey Keller capped a fun night of ceremony at Benaroya Hall by earning the Professional Sports Star of the Year award at the 77th Seattle Sports Star of the Year banquet Wednesday night. Also honored were University of Washington tailback Chris Polk as Male Athlete of the Year, Gonzaga basketball player Courtney Vandersloot as Female Athlete of the Year, and the Eastern Washington football team that won the 2010 FCS championship... The 41-year-old Keller, who retired after last season when he helped lead the Sounders to their third straight U. S. Open Cup, recalled in his speech that he spent his first 17 years in pro soccer in Europe. Sledge hockey had its beginnings in Sweden where a group of friends who had various disabilities began look for a way to play hockey even though they were disabled. The game is very similar to ice hockey in that each team has a goalie , two defensemen and three forwards. After a few years the game was gaining in popularity and by 1980 the game had caught on so that international tournaments were started. At first they played without a goalie. Sledge hockey is a sport that was introduced during the 1994 Lillehammer Games in Norway. By 1982 the game was popular in Sweden, Norway, Canada, USA and Great Britain. The player sits on a sledge with runners to allow the puck to pass underneath....
